In 2021, 2829 people in Victoria were found to have melanoma. Out of these, 1650 were males (58.4%) and 1174 were females (41.6%). There were 5 cases where the sex was not clearly identified. The diagnosis rate is currently 28.3 per 100,000 for males and 20 per 100,000 for females. The average age of diagnosis is 64 for males and 59 for females.
Melanoma accounted for 7.7% of all cancer diagnoses and 2.5% of cancer-related deaths in 2021 in Victoria. It ranked as the 5th most common cancer and the 14th leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the region.
Queensland has the highest rate at 66, much higher than NSW (32), WA (29), and SA (26 per 100,000 GP-patient visits).
Melanoma can affect people of all ages. It’s often seen in older individuals, with about half of cases occurring in those over 50. The average age at diagnosis is 59.
